Assuming its not... Look to the order of BODMAS as I was taught it...

Stands for:

Brackets
Of
Division
Muliplication
Addition
Subtraction

This is the order that a maths problem should be tackled in

Yeah, I had that problem. Could be related due to the fact I'm not American and where I'm from we use a different default letter for a variable.. Or just because it didn't occur to me.
