Marine discharged over online Obama comments

Quote
Washington (CNN) -- A Marine who used his Facebook page to criticize President Barack Obama has been discharged, a Marine Corps spokesman said Wednesday.

Sgt. Gary Stein was given an "other-than-honorable" discharge, said Capt. Brian Block, a spokesman for the Marines.

Among other comments posted to his Facebook page, Stein called Obama a liar and suggested he would not follow some orders issued by the president.

I imagine there will be more to come. I believe there is a statistic somewhere(can't find it right now) that states that the average civilization/empire lasts 200 to 500 years. How long has America been around......

If I recall correctly, the US military has annual training on these types of activities.....what you can do, what you can say, etc. when representing yourself as a military member.

Had this guy simply posted the comments on a FB  page that didn't indicate any type of military affiliation (real or implied) he would still be serving.

His disclaimer doesn't invalidate those restrictions because he identified himself as a US Marine, and his page calls itself the "Armed Forces Tea Party Page".

Fact of the matter is this guy screwed up.  He knew he could get in trouble, and if he claims otherwise - He's an idiot.

There is that thing about forfeiting your rights when you join the military. So I suppose the guy should have thought of that before deciding he is going to voice his opinion of FB about his Commander and Chief I will say that.

I thought everyone knew that you just didn't do stuff like that, no matter your personal feelings.

Friends of mine have been expelled from school for posting song lyrics in their facebook. Things like "one dead cop, no more donut shops." First of all, its not the schools business. Second, freedom of speech. It is different when you're in the military though.

The US president is head of state ( as far as i know) and also is the highest authority in US military, so writing that you will not follow an order means bye bye to your job. In military orders are orders, and you have to follow them.

I saw this in the news a while ago, I still don't quite understand it. Maybe they saw it as him becoming a conscientious  objector? I don't know
